Big Dogs Playing Poker
In the Fine Art Business, there are three words that either bring a smile or a scowl to a gallery Owner/Directors face, and those are.... "DOGS PLAYING POKER", (you thought I was going to say ELVIS ON VELVET, didn't you? We'll cover that in another newsletter....)
To be accurate, the painting by CM Coolidge is actually called "A friend in need", with one of the pups slippin' his buddy an ace under the table.
Now, I am not one to advocate messin' with a classic, in fact I would stay away from it, but then I saw Somerset House Artist Andy Thomas' original and unique view on this classic theme of a group of friends playing a game of poker.
Inspired by Coolidge's work, Thomas decided to elevate the canines in his version, Thomas's subjects aren't just dogs, they are THE BIG DOGS, They are the current and past Presidents of the United States of America.
Two versions, THE GRAND OL'GANG depicts Republican presidents back to Theodore Roosevelt, while the TRUE BLUES captures our Democratic Presidents all the way back to Jackson!! All the while, playing poker!!

It’s lonely at the top!
Our Presidents have a uniquely solitary job. They surround themselves with the strength and wisdom of talented and experienced people, but as Harry Truman once said, “The buck stops here.” We can hardly imagine the weight of decisions they must bear. Perhaps that is why we are so familiar with the before and after photographs depicting the accelerated ageing process while in office. These leaders deserve some time to relax and unwind.

Some of the greatest times anyone can enjoy are when we can let our guard down because we are among those who have been where we have been: people who know the truth and don’t make harsh judgments. We can have a great time with each other especially after the challenge has been met and the heat is off. We can talk, commiserate and just be ourselves.
Who do former presidents hang out with? Wouldn’t it be just a great time if they could “let their hair down” together and just have a time to laugh and remember? Can you imagine that? |
