Special Second Friday's Event - Internationally Acclaimed Artist
SUEELLEN ROSS

Friday, August 11, 2006 5:00p.m. to 8:00p.m.
Heather Long, owner of the Northwoods Art Gallery, announced today that the Northwoods Art Gallery Second Friday event for August would include Sueellen Ross, on Friday August 11, 2006 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
Sueellen Ross brings a fresh approach to her art. She is known for both her strong design and her subtle humor. The lively images Ross creates with her original hand-colored etchings and mixed media paintings are based on her own experiences; as a city person, she often approaches wildlife from the urban dweller's point of view.
Best known for her work in original intaglio prints, Ross says that etchings allow her "to design major pieces that are strong in texture and line, brilliant in color and meticulous in detail." Ross attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. As soon as she was old enough to hold a pencil, Ross drew her childhood passions — horses and cats.
Ross' range of subjects has considerably expanded since childhood, though she still holds a special fondness for etchings of domestic cats. Cat lovers, who instantly recognize the realism of Ross' cats, have a particular appreciation of them; she captures both their characteristic poses and their own endearing personalities. She draws her own cats and those of her friends and neighbors going about their daily business of being cats.
Ross' original hand-colored etchings and paintings have been exhibited from Alaska to Florida. Her 1986 one-woman show at Seattle's Frye Art Museum was very successful. In 1987, Ross was the only etching artist included in the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's "Birds in Art" show. Ross modifies and simplifies her subjects, reducing them to their essential forms. She expresses these essential elements with an unmatched elegance.
Sueellen Ross has been called America’s Definitive Cat and Dog Artist. For more than twenty years, her paintings of cat and dog personalities have delighted collectors around the world.
Ross combines her passion for producing art with her love for animals to create works of exceptionally strong design and subtle wit. Using India ink, watercolor and pencil, Ross developed her own unique combination of mixed media concentrating on her drawing skills. Her book, "Painting Radiant Realism," has been published by North Light Press.
Her paintings, etchings and prints have won her Feature Artist postions at art shows across the nation and her works have been included at the wildlife art sale at Christie’s in London. She has been listed in Who’s Who in American Art since 1987.
Ross continues to reside in Seattle with her husband and her pets.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend this event, and a four legged friend on a lead of course.
